The Elephant Corridor

Time is an issue no longer, for just a few hours drive from Colombo lies a hotel set in Sri Lanka’s very own ‘savannah’- the Elephant Corridor at Sigiriya.

This innovative eco lodge offers 21 luxury villas set against the backdrop of the Kandalama hills and ancient Sigiriya rock and would have to be the most peaceful and relaxing luxury hotel Sri Lanka has to offer.

No motorised vehicles are allowed on the hotel’s 200 acres of sprawling land, making silence the hotel’s most enticing feature. But, unfortunately silence does not come cheap. In fact it starts at US$ 275 per night at the Elephant Corridor. If you would like to escape the outside world entirely, you could treat yourself to a stay at the presidential villa for the tidy sum of US$1270 per night.

But many consider this a small price to pay for the unique jungle experience on offer at the hotel. It has all special features a luxury hotel should have, such as your own private garden and dipping pool, spa and massage centre, sauna, restaurants, and bars, but without the usual pretension and flamboyance so often associated with luxury hotels.

Each villa has been specially crafted to blend the rustic feel of the surrounding wilderness with the elegance of luxury living and houses hand-carved furniture, including stylish four- poster beds. The cool colours of the room and the high ceilings create an ambience that will help even the most stress prone person to relax.

Rooms also showcase unique pieces of Sri Lankan art work, which is available for purchase. And if the beauty of the place inspires you to want to create your own piece of art, just pick up crayons and easel so appropriately provided in the room.

The hotel was designed to blend in with its natural surroundings and as such has very little impact on the abundance of wildlife that calls the Elephant Corridor home- including the many wild elephants that seasonally come to drink from the hotel’s water irrigation tank at dusk. This means that there is an abundance of wildlife just waiting to be discovered right outside your doorstep.
