Relatives complain of severe beating by police

Sri Lanka's police force is accused of torturing a three-wheel driver resulting in his death within days.

An open verdict was declared after the post mortem held on Sunday on the death of Wijeratne Gunasinghe.

Dr. Hulandawa delivering the verdict said that Gunasinghe was internally bruised.

Gunasinghe has severely been beaten in his three-wheel taxi on April 10 by police including constable bearing ID No. 22728, relatives said.

They said Gunasinghe was then taken to custody by Maharagama police and badly beaten overnight using cricket stumps while in custody.

Gunasinghe's wife who was also travelling in the three wheeler pleaded to the police not to beat him as he had a heart condition.

'Heart problem'

Allegations against police torture have been increasing

His relatives told BBC Sandeshaya that Gunasinghe has been admitted to the hospital days after he was released on bail.

Wijeratne died on Saturday night in the intensive care unit at Kalubowila Teaching Hospital.

Police for their part deny that the assault led to Gunasinghe's death.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) DD Ransinghe handling the inquiry into the death told BBC Sandeshaya that Gunasinghe's head might have struck something hard when in custody.

He further said that pus was found inside the scull of the deceased and that it was revealed that Gunasinghe had a "heart problem".

Allegations against Sri Lanka's police of torture and killing in custody have recently increased.

Human rights organisations expressed fear whether the country is once again heading towards era of police terror.
