Land disputes in Sri Lanka
Land disputes in Sri Lanka, particularly in rural areas, have resulted in several bloody attacks in recent years, police said. A family of five, including two young children, were hacked to death with a sword-like blade north of the capital Colombo on 18 May, 2007 in what police said was an attack over a land dispute.

A family of five, including two young children, were hacked to death with a sword-like blade north of the capital Colombo overnight in what police said was an attack over a land dispute.
Land disputes in Sri Lanka, particularly in rural areas, have resulted in several bloody attacks in recent years, police said.
K W Tillakaratne (36), his wife, their two children, aged four and eight, and a relative were hacked to death in Delgoda when they were sleeping, while the sixth person escaped with injuries, police said.
"It is difficult to imagine that anyone can kill children like this," a crime scene police officer said.
"It appears to be a land dispute. There was already a case pending in the courts."
A 12-year-old girl from the same family who was injured in the attack survived and was admitted to hospital with cut wounds, a hospital source said.
Sri Lanka is no stranger to grisly attacks and massacres realted to land disputes, particularly in rural areas. Today's killings came two weeks after a similar incident where a mother and her three children were killed in the same region, police said.
