Dogs domesticated between 6000 and 6500 YBP

Scientific evidence reveals that dogs were domesticated between 6000 and 6,500 years before present (YBP) by the prehistoric or the Balangoda man (Homo Sapiens Balangodiensis).
Zoo Archaeologist and Palaeontologist Kelum Manamendra-Arachchi told The Island yesterday that a recent excavation by the Assistant Director of Archaeology Nimal Perera and his team at the Bellanbendi Pellasa near Walwe River in the Balangoda area had found a soil layer containing a lower jaw molar tooth.
This layer was handed over to Kelum earlier this week for identification. "Though a small fragment is missing, it is very clear that this tooth belongs to a dog," added Kelum.
The excavation was done under the supervision of former Director General and Consultant, Department of Archaeology, Dr. Siran Upendra Deraniyagala.
Kelum said eminent naturalists like Seligman, R. L. Spittle and P. E. P. Deraniyagala had information that Veddas used dogs for hunting purposes. However, despite numerous efforts to prove that prehistoric man used dogs for hunting purposes, they had not found enough evidence.
According to Kelum, excavation on prehistoric caves and deposits were not successful in relation to dog fossil remains though they found fossils of other animals.
