Rival co-operation leads to return of key Sri Lanka local official 2005-07-03 00:04:21

COLOMBO, July 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Co-operation from the main opposition party has led to the return of Sri Lanka's ousted Chief Minister of its rich Western Province, official sources said.

Reginold Cooray who resigned last month in the face of no-confidence vote moved against him by the opposition United National Party (UNP) was sworn back in his position here Sunday with support coming from the UNP.

The UNP and the leftist JVP (People's Liberation Front), then part of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) joined hands to move the motion against Cooray quoting corruption, mismanagement and financial irregularities as reasons.

With the JVP's exit from the UPFA on the issue of joint mechanism with Tamil Tigers, Cooray sensed inevitable defeat and tendered his resignation, which rendered the motion ineffective.

Following the withdrawal from the UPFA government, the JVP however signed an agreement with the UPFA to stop the UNP coming to power in the Western Province.

But a section of the UPFA who are opposed to the agreement reached an agreement with the UNP to reappoint Cooray.

Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana reappointed Cooray to this key position on Friday when 62 of the 104 members in the Western Provincial Council including the UPFA and the UNP extended their support to Cooray.

The UNP action is demonstrative of their strategy of not toppling the central government despite the exit of the JVP, analysts said.

The ruling party is now reduced to just 80 seats in the 225-member parliament following the exit of the JVP.

The UNP is only interested in forcing the government to hold the presidential election by November this year.

However, the government contends that President Chandrika Kumaratunga's term would only end next year. Enditem
