A HOUSEMAID was yesterday found guilty by on two counts of theft from two different families she used to work for.

Pushpa Ranjani from Sri Lanka stood impassively in the dock as Judge Lemonia Kaoutzani ruled she was guilty beyond reasonable doubt of the theft of jewellery and other items from two different families, amounting to a total value of around £1,500.

Ranjani pleaded innocent throughout the trial.

Two families that Ranjani had been working for had reported to police that between April 2003 and August 2004, the housemaid had been systematically stealing from them without them realising. The first family claimed that the maid had been stealing clothes and jewellery, while the second family claimed she stole over £1,000 worth of jewellery from the elderly parents living with them.

Ranjani claimed she had left the first family, because the elderly mother living with them was beating her continuously and mistreating her. The family dismissed those claims, telling the court the grandmother was 75-years-old, bed stricken and blind in one eye.

Some of the stolen items were eventually found in cardboard box kept in Ranjani’s room while she was living with the second family. Some expensive items, like a £600 diamond ring and a £300 gold necklace, were never found and are believed to have been sent back to Sri Lanka.

Judge Kaoutzani said the overwhelming witness testimonies had led her to the conclusion that the accused was guilty.

The judge ordered that Ranjani be kept in remand pending sentencing, which will take place on February 28.
