Jaffna Hindu College student, Sivaprakasam Mayoorran who became the all-island first in the Advanced Level Mathematics stream with 3.4102 Z score marks, has studied with the aid of a bottle lamp during most of his school days.
Born in 1986 in Thenmarachchi, Jaffna, he entered Hindu College in 1997. Like many other students in the South, he had also taken tuition for the successful completion of the highly competitive exam.
Mayooran’s father, Veerakaatti Sivaprakahsam who is a draftsman at the Road Development Authority (RDA), said that during the war time, they did not have electricity and his son had to do his studies using kerosene oil lamps. “It was only after the Ceasefire Agreement that we got such facilities. We are not people who are financially well off. Myooran entered Hindu College, having passed the Grade 5 scholarship exam with 154 marks. Since then he was always the first in the class every term,” he said.He said that his son got a gold medal from New South Wales University, Australia in 2002 for his performance at an international mathematics competition.
Mayooran’s only brother is also a third-year engineering student at the Peradeniya University. Asked about his son’s future plans, he said that they would send him abroad for higher studies.
“We will send him abroad only for higher studies and want him to return to Sri Lanka to serve his mother land,” he said. He also requested the old boys of Hindu College, scattered all over the world, to assist them to get a full scholarship at a foreign university.
The performance of Hindu College in the exam this year was further enhanced by Ponnuthurai Sivapalan, who clinched the second place in the Island in the Bio Science Stream, and by Nahendram Banigobal and Sabanathan Thanesan who secured fourth and fifth places in the Maths stream respectively.
