Lieutenant colonel Lalith Asha Kumara Wijerathna died on August 13, 2006 while he was in operation at the Muhamalai forward defence line. He was at that time the commanding officer with the task to regain the FDL at Muhamalai, which faced severe attacks by the LTTE.

Lieutenant Colonel Wijerathna joined the army while he was studying for his Advanced Level at the Revatha National School in Balapitiya. He managed to join the army amidst objection from his family members.

After a two year training at the Diyathalawa camp Lalith Wijerathna joined the commando regiment as a 2nd lieutenant. After serving in the army for two years, in 1996 he was wounded and for the second time in 1997 which only resulted in encouraging him to go back to the battlefield.

He was called in for a special training by India thrice as well as in Pakistan in 1997. The training and his hard work led him to a promotion as captain.

In 2006, he left the country for another special training, this time it was with the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Special Fight Arts Academy and Training College in United States. He was back in the country last June and was promoted as a major. When he left for the battle field this time, he never thought this one would be the last battle he would face for his own country.

He was interred under the soil of the country that he was fighting for until his last breath, at 30. While he was in the army he was conferred with the titles, Desha puthra Sammana, as well as the Swarna Jayanthi medals.

It has been nearly two moths since Wijerathna sacrificed his life for his country, and for nearly two months Mother Lanka had forgotten him.

Lalith Wijerathna is to be honoured by the United Sates. He will be given the honorary shield for the best student by the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Special Fight Arts Academy and Training College in the United States, nominated by the current commander in chief in the academy, Major General Parker.
