MAJOR K.W. DHAMMIKA KUMARA of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) on his noble mission to defend the Motherland laid his life in Veppankulam, Vavuniya in an LTTE explosion while he was performing route-clearing duties on 5th February 2007.

He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Major in recognition of his dedication and commitment to the service.

Kongaha Waththage Dhammika Kumara was born on 18th May 1973 in Kandy. He completed his education at Panwila Rajasinghe Central College in Kandy. After successful completion of his education, his young blood and adventurous enthusiasm, he selected the noble military career for him. As a result, he joined the Sri Lanka Army on 22nd January 1997 and was sent to Pakistan Military Academy for basic military training before he was commissioned to the rank of Second Lieutenant to the 6th Battalion Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) on 20th December 1997.

His efficiency and enthusiasm in performing duty brought his due promotions as Lieutenant and afterwards as Captain respectively on 22nd January 2000 and 22nd July 2003.

Major Dhammika Kumara took part in many military operations against LTTE as an infantry officer until he was appointed the Battalion Intelligence Officer of the 7th Battalion SLSR. At the time of his untimely demise, Major Dhammika Kumara was the Officer Commanding of the ‘B’ Company of 7 SLSR.

Major Dhammika Kumara also had his further military training at Commando Training School, Kudaoya, Infantry Training Centre at Minneriya and Army Training School at Maduruoya.

In recognition of his valuable service rendered to the Nation, Sri Lanka Army conferred decorations, Deshaputhra Medal, Purna Bhumi Medal, North and East Operational Medal, 50th Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Army Medal and 50th Independence Anniversary Medal on him. Major K.W. Dhammika Kumara’s name goes to military history as one more avaliant soldier who laid his life for the sovereignty of the motherland.
